Everton player ratings as Michael Keane and seven others awful at West Ham

Jordan Pickford 7

Despite what some pedants with agendas might claim, could do little to keep out Aaron Cresswell’s perfectly-struck free-kick and did well to deny Antonio in the build-up to West Ham’s second goal before Jarrod Bowen netted from the rebound.

Jonjoe Kenny 5

Restored to his preferred right-back role, he got forward to good effect early on but needed more composure with his crossing and found himself forced back as the game went on.

Vitalii Mykolenko 5

A big chance to stake his claim for the left-back berth in the run-in, he nevertheless afforded Bowen too much space at times and at a time that Everton can’t afford to carry passengers, still appears to be getting to grips with the English game.

Michael Keane 4

Handed the captain’s armband in Seamus Coleman’s absence, rather than lead by example, with his side already chasing the game he was guilty of a fatal mistake, producing a second yellow card challenge on Michail Antonio to receive his marching orders.

Ben Godfrey 5

Got a boot in the face from Antonio for his troubles with some brave defending in the first half, he offered Everton mobility at the back but was kept on his toes.

Alex Iwobi 4

Produced an industrious hard-working display and pressed well so it seems cruel that his display should be defined by a single mistake but it was he who gave the ball away for West Ham’s second goal just as Everton’s tails were up and such are the fine margins at this level.

Mason Holgate 6

Brought in as a late replacement for Donny van de Beek who was injured in the pre-match warm-up, he had to play out of position in midfield. Gave away the free-kick for West Ham’s opener with his foul on Bowen but then equalised with a deflected but sweetly-struck volley.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 5

Still a shadow of the marauding playmaker Evertonians were purring over early in the season but he is their only natural option available in the engine room right now.

Demarai Gray 5

Like Doucoure, he desperately needs to rediscover that form of earlier in the campaign and while he’s getting sharper, the penetrating runs need more end product.

Richarlison 6

Despite cutting inside from the left, he found himself on the end of more chances than centre-forward Calvert-Lewin and was guilty of missing a couple of them in the first half when played through by Iwobi and then a big opportunity that went wide after a Ryan Fredericks mistake.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 5

Restored to the starting line-up to spearhead the attack, a first goal of 2022 continues to elude him. It’s worrying that he isn’t getting on the end of much but perhaps should have done better when Iwobi threaded the ball through to him early in the second half.

Anthony Gordon (on 78 for Calvert-Lewin) 6

Late run-out but unable to turn the tide.
