Everton player ratings as Mason Holgate and nine others abysmal in Tottenham Hotspur thrashing

Jordan Pickford 5

Must have been the kind of horrible night he’s seldom experienced since his Sunderland days as Tottenham players were queueing up to shoot. There were question marks over the second goal as he allowed the low shot from Son to go under his body but later Saved well from Son and Doherty.

Seamus Coleman 3

As proud and as passionate as they come for Everton, he’s a modern day great but you wonder whether the time to hand over the baton to Nathan Patterson is approaching as he struggled to get near Tottenham’s marauding attackers at times.

Jonjoe Kenny 4

Has done well to force himself back into the reckoning and works hard as a square peg in a round hole at left-back but he failed to stem the tide here and moved to the right of a back five in the second half as Everton attempted to seal the gaping holes in their defence.

Mason Holgate 3

If ever a moment summed up a shambolic half of football, it was Holgate smashing an attempted clearance into centre-back partner Keane’s face from point-blank range. Given the run-around before the break, he had a new man alongside him after the interval but fared little better.

Michael Keane 3

The aforementioned incident with Holgate added injury to insult. Spooked by having Harry Kane over his shoulder, he panicked and arrowed the ball past his own goalkeeper to open the scoring and didn’t re-emerge after the re-start.

Allan 4

As the anchor man in Everton’s midfield trio, he was supposed to provide a shield in front of the defence but found himself totally overrun.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 4

Choked of space in the engine room, he was unable to make the kind of runs that can hurt the opposition.

Donny van de Beek 4

Smart on the ball and comfortable in possession, the Dutchman is supposed to be the man who can knit defence into attack for Everton but they just couldn’t get the ball forward and he was hooked before the hour-mark.

Anthony Gordon 6

Possibly the only member of the visiting team who could come away with any sense of satisfaction from his efforts. Plenty of energy and drive, he got back to make a crucial block early on as Son was about to shoot but it proved a temporary reprieve.

Richarlison 4

Says he prefers to play as a centre-forward but there was very little goal threat here, either cutting inside from the left or leading the line. Desperately needs to get back to the form shown in his first two seasons.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 4

Only had one real shot which he dragged wide across the face of goal, early in the second half. Remains starved of the service that made him one of the Premier League’s most-feared marksmen last season but great strikers like Kane, are able to fashion their own chances when the supply lines dry up.

Substitutes

Jarrad Branthwaite 4 (on 46 for Keane)

Brought on to shore things up at the back but found himself part of a defence that conceded just seconds after he’d entered the fray.

Vitalii Mykolenko 5 (on 59 for Van de Beek)

It’s been a tough time for him so far – obviously both on or off the pitch – since his arrival and he only came on here after the damage was done.

Dele Alli 5 (on 69 for Calvert-Lewin)

Was given a generous round of applause from the fans of the club where he played for so long but still looks to be shaking off the rust.
