Recalled for his first Premier League outing of the season due to Nathan Patterson’s injury on Scotland duty, the evergreen captain got straight back to work like he’d never been away, marauding up the flank and defending resolutely.

Got caught out of position a couple of times early on, he kept his nerve to make some crucial interceptions after the break when it was backs against the wall.

James Tarkowski 7
Strong and commanding at the back, his one blip of the afternoon came when he gave away possession cheaply and Southampton almost went 2-1 up but thankfully Everton scrambled the ball clear, went up the other end and took the lead themselves.
Conor Coady 8
Denied by VAR against former club Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, on-loan defender netted his first Everton goal by poking home at the back post for an instant reply while he was also solid at the back.
Idrissa Gueye 8
Everton’s standout performer in the first half, he was imperious in front of the back four but was caught napping for Southampton’s opener when he sloppily gave away possession, enabling the hosts to break and score through Aribo but he recovered well after his error.
Amadou Onana 7
Still a tantalising work in progress but some delightful touches at times and his clever header set up Coady’s quickfire equaliser.
Alex Iwobi 7
Energetic in the engine room, he brought craft early on but needed to show graft in the little stages as Everton clung on after his cross to Dwight McNeil had put the visitors ahead.
Dwight McNeil 8
Like Coady, the former Burnley winger also got himself on the scoresheet for the first time as an Everton player, coolly crashing into the roof of the net from a tight angle which was just reward for a game he grew into.
Neal Maupay 7
A real hard-working striker’s performance in difficult circumstances away from home, he relished his ongoing battle against Southampton’s big centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap, despite his opponent being much taller and heavier.
Demarai Gray 7
Continues to excite and frustrate in almost equal measure, his blistering pace makes him such a potent weapon but too often his composure let him down when getting into promising positions.
