Everton player ratings as Jordan Pickford excellent but seven others poor at Man United

Jordan Pickford 9

England’s number one had to be at his brilliant best as United players queued up for target practice against him, saving spectacularly from Marcus Rashford, Marcel Sabitzer and Antony on numerous occasions before finally being beaten at his near post by McTominay although the heroics continued after the break, including tipping over the bar from Fernandes’ header.

Seamus Coleman 5

His individual mistake gifted United their second goal as he failed to control a Lisandro Martinez long ball which slipped under his foot and enabled Rashford to square to Martial which was cruel after he had carved out an enticing opportunity for Simms when the game was still goalless and had largely dealt well with the pacy Sancho.

Ben Godfrey 5

Hooked at half-time after enduring a torrid first 45 minutes and despite one impressive last-ditch tackle on Anthony, many of the waves of United attacks had come down his flank with him being caught out on several occasions.

Michael Keane 6

His under-hit back header that put Tarkowski in trouble against Rashford early on set a nervous tone but was decent in the air against a series of attacks.

James Tarkowski 6

Couldn’t get close enough to McTominay for the opener, he had to rely on his strength and positional play against one of football’s most fleet-footed attacking units.

Idrissa Gueye 5

Outnumbered in the middle with Abdoulaye Doucoure suspended and Onana struggling to read danger, he was on the back foot for long spells fighting fires before making way along with his partner.

Amadou Onana 5

For all his huge promise, Everton’s biggest signing of last summer displayed his inexperience here as he let Scott McTominay escape his clutches far too easily for his goal, fell over when defending Jadon Sancho and generally let the game pass him by in far too passive a fashion before making way on the hour mark.

Alex Iwobi 6

Picked out some nice passes early on and continued to be one of the visitors’ most-energetic performers on what was a difficult afternoon.

Dwight McNeil 5

Like Iwobi on the opposite flank he worked hard but there was very little going forward here and too often found himself going backwards rather than forwards.

Demarai Gray 5

Dragged a decent opportunity wide when Everton were already 2-0 down after being picked out by Davies, he acted as a foil to Simms in what looked like a nominal 4-1-4-1 formation but despite some nice touches, he remained on the periphery of proceedings.

Ellis Simms 5

Spurned a huge chance to put Everton in front when picked out by Coleman with time and space but lacked the conviction he’d shown against Chelsea last month, tamely rolling his effort wide, looking more like the rookie he is on the big stage despite some decent hold up play.

Vitalii Mykolenko (on 46 for Godfrey) 6

Stemmed the tide down Everton’s left flank after the break.

James Garner (on 60 for Gueye) 6

Had a go against his previous employers.

Tom Davies (on 60 for Onana) 6

Picked out Gray for a decent chance.

Neal Maupay (on 70 for Simms) 5

Little impact.

Nathan Patterson (on 87 for Coleman)

First minutes under Dyche.
