Everton player ratings as eight men poor in Liverpool defeat

Jordan Pickford 5

What is it with England’s number one in front of the Kop? Pickford generally had a sound night, keeping his head amid the barracking and saving well from Darwin Nunez in the second half but when it really mattered and Liverpool broke the deadlock, he found himself inexplicably out of position to present Mohamed Salah with tap-in to an empty net.

Seamus Coleman 5

Always gives everything but while he rolled back the years against Arsenal the were times here on his 400th appearance that it’s painfully obvious Everton’s warrior captain in his 35th year as he – and other defenders it must be said – were left chasing shadows.

Vitalii Mykolenko 5

Another of Everton’s players who were galvanised against Arsenal but struggled here as he was often torn one way and then the other by Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Conor Coady 5

Returning to Anfield, the former Liverpool defender played near namesake Coady Gakpo on for the hosts’ second goal and then picked up the first booking of the game for a foul on Stefan Bajcetic on what was ultimately a disappointing return.

James Tarkowski 7

The Everton defender to emerge with most credit from this encounter, he came agonisingly close to his second headed goals in as many games from a corner kick but hit the post while he also made some important interceptions.

Idrissa Gueye 5

It’s to be hoped that Dyche can restore his bite because the Senegalese international’s second coming at Everton continues to underwhelm and whereas he’d often snap into tackles to eradicate danger first time around, he appears to have now lost half a yard.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 5

Booked late on for grabbing Fabinho, it was a sad reflection on his performance that he had to resort to such tactics to get close to his opponents as he was unable to control matters in the engine room to the kind of degree he enjoyed against the Gunners.

Amadou Onana 6

Unable to dominate proceedings like he’d done against Arsenal, he produced a few silky touches in the first half but faded and was hauled off perhaps to save him for Leeds United.

Dwight McNeil 5

Industrious if unspectacular, his deliveries from wide areas offer a threat but couldn’t find the mark here.

Alex Iwobi 5

Picked out Davies for a decent opportunity late on but found himself going backwards more often than forwards and distribution was sloppy on occasions.

Ellis Simms 6

Thrown in at the deep end for what was only his second Premier League start, there was plenty of enthusiasm early on, almost capitalising on a Joel Matip mistake with a shot that was blocked but he’s still very green at this level.

Demarai Gray (on 62 for Simms) 5

Offered more legs coming off the bench but no way through.

Neal Maupay (on 77 for McNeil) 5

Simms is more a like-for-like alternative to the injured Calvert-Lewin but it was damning that he didn’t get the nod to lead the line here and the team still don’t play to his strengths.

Tom Davies (on 77 for Onana) 5

Had a big chance in front of the Kop when he made contact with a back post header from an Iwobi cross but despite having plenty of time, his effort was off target.
