Everton player ratings as Andre Gomes awful but three players worse at Crystal Palace

Jordan Pickford 5

Couldn’t be faulted for either of the first two goals and had been forced to punch clear Michael Olise’s wickedly inswinging corner moments before the opener but the same player’s effort that hit the crossbar before Zaha bagged the third left him flat-footed.

Ben Godfrey 3

Playing on the right-hand side of a centre-back trio, he was tasked with trying to contain Wilfried Zaha but the Crystal Palace dangerman left him firmly in his wake to tee up Jean-Philippe Mateta for a simple second goal and had him on his backside with a piece of second half trickery.

Michael Keane 3

While he was dominant in the air during open play, he and his centre-back colleagues have to take collective responsibility for the manner in which Marc Guehi was left unmarked to head home the opening goal in simple fashion.

Mason Holgate 3

Playing on the left of a centre-back trio, he looked solid in possession but had his work cut out trying to deal with Jean-Philippe Mateta who showed him a clean pair of heels on a few occasions.

Seamus Coleman 5

Started where he left off against Newcastle United with some marauding runs as a right wing-back but the early promise faded with the quality of his deliveries dropping in the second half.

Andre Gomes 4

Everton’s paucity of alternatives in central midfield due to Allan’s suspension and Donny van de Beek being cup-tied ensured he was called upon but for a supposed playmaker he offer little in the opponents’ half and remains a liability off the ball, picking up his now seemingly obligatory booking for hauling someone down rather than making a tackle.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 5

The Blues desperately need to see the mobile box-to-box Doucoure displays of early season to return. Now he’s more boxed in and unable to influence himself on the game with such frustrations epitomised by a hospital pass that played Coleman into trouble early in the second half.

Jonjoe Kenny 5

Instantly restored after his suspension, the home-grown hero has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Frank Lampard’s appointment but while he was game as always, he remains a square peg in a round hole when operating at left wing-back and made way at the break.

Andros Townsend 7

His return to former club Crystal Palace cruelly ended prematurely as he was hurt after being caught by Tyrick Mitchell following an encouraging opening.

Anthony Gordon 5

Picked up a cheap booking for trying to grab Michael Olise, he put a shift in as we’ve come to expect but there were precious few magical moments on a frustrating afternoon.

Richarlison 4

Snatching at chances, falling to the turf or being caught offside, he was in the thick of proceedings but nothing was coming off for him.

Demarai Gray (on for Townsend 17) 5

Fashioned an opening with a speculative long range effort and should have done better when played into the box shortly after Palace’s third goal. Like Doucoure, Everton need for him to recapture his early season form.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 5 (on 46 for Kenny)

Linked up the attack play neatly but ultimately he’s a centre-forward who never had any sniff of getting on the scoreheet.

Alex Iwobi 5 (on 73 for Coleman)

Might have considered himself unfortunate not to have started after his winner against Newcastle United but was unable to produce any such moments of quality here after coming on.
