Everton player ratings as Andre Gomes and four others awful at Southampton

Jordan Pickford - 8

Made three great stops before producing a world-class save to deny Timo Livramento and keep the scores level at the break. Although beaten twice, Pickford was man of the match for Everton and kept the score down.

Seamus Coleman - 6

Solid enough defensively, but due to the threat of Kyle Walker-Peters and Elyounoussi, wasn’t able to get forward as much as he would like. Unlike last week, the Blues captain was unable to inspire his side to victory.

Mason Holgate - 8

The only other player behind Jordan Pickford who could be satisfied with his afternoon’s work. Made a number of great interventions in either half, and was comfortable on the ball.

Michael Keane - 5

Allowed Broja to get in behind him in the first half and was often careless when in possession. Also helped play Andre Gomes into trouble with a stray pass for Southampton’s opener.

Jonjoe Kenny - 6

As solid as he can be when playing out of position. However, like Coleman, struggled to get forward as much as he would like. Produced a create block to deny Broja, but was always facing a tough challenge playing on the left.

Allan - 5

Booked for a foul early doors, and at times looked a little lost in the middle with Everton struggling to retain possession. Wasted a glorious chance to slide Dominic Calvert-Lewin in just before the break before being replaced by Andre Gomes at the interval.

Donny van de Beek - 6

Looked comfortable on the ball again, but Everton weren't getting the ball to him in areas to hurt Southampton. Also could have shot on a couple occasions instead of passing. Was pretty ominous after Southampton went ahead.

Alex Iwobi - 5

Started the game well, but was guilty of giving the ball away needless on a number of occasions. Constantly made the wrong choices in the second half before being replaced by Andros Townsend.

Anthony Gordon - 7

A typical Anthony Gordon performance. Looking to get on the ball and make things happen for his side, however, he was left feeding off scraps. Replaced by Dele Alli after Everton fell behind.

Richarlison - 6

Can’t knock the Brazilian's effort, but like Gordon and Calvert-Lewin, was feeding off scraps. He also should have done much better with an early chance to give his side the lead.

Calvert-Lewin - 6

Tried hard all game up top by himself, but is lacking the service he needs to make a difference. Booked for moaning about not being given a free-kick in the first-half and was often isolated after his side fell behind.

Substitutes

Andre Gomes - 4

On at the break for Allan, and struggled to cope with the pace of the game. Can perhaps understand why he would have wanted a foul in the lead up to Armstrong’s goal, but in reality he needs to be stronger and not lose the ball so easily.

Andros Townsend - 4

Barely got a touch of the ball out wide and was pretty ineffective after coming on. Work to do to prove he deserves a place in his side’s starting line-up.

Dele Alli - 6

Looked to get on the ball and make things happen, but by the time he came on the game was over.
