Everton player ratings as Amadou Onana good but quality badly lacking vs Southampton

Jordan Pickford 6

Parried away a powerful header from Romeo Lavia when the score was goalless and then pushed a low drive from James Ward-Prowse on to his right hand post in first half stoppage time but was powerless to stop the Southampton captain when he danced around Godfrey just after the restart and then when he despatched a perfectly-struck free-kick.

Seamus Coleman 7

Everton’s captain rolled back the year in the first half with an energetic attack-minded display and although he was pinned back more after the break, he continued to lead by example before making way for Gordon.

Vitalii Mykolenko 6

Probed well early on, picking out Gray with a clever low pass when a cross looked on that might have produced a goal had it found his team-mate’s stronger right foot, he had a tougher time having to defend more after the interval.

Ben Godfrey 6

Operating on the right hand side of a central defensive trio, he overcame an early injury scare only to find himself being undone by Ward-Prowse’s delicate footwork for the equaliser but later got a crucial block on a shot from substitute Adam Armstrong.

Conor Coady 6

Well-timed block on a Che Evans shot, he was up for this one from the start, he was repeatedly cajoling his team-mates but ultimately that wasn’t enough.

James Tarkowski 6

Won plenty of headers in what was a typically robust display at the back but found himself caught out of position for the equaliser.

Idrissa Gueye 6

Energetic and determined, he was tigerish in the tackle, although sometimes seemed to take an extra touch after doing the hard work.

Amadou Onana 8

Headed in his first goal for the club from a Gray corner-kick and put in some terrific tackles in a dominant personal display but those around him could not match his stature.

Alex Iwobi 6

Took his place in the starting line-up just six days after Everton stated he faced three weeks on the sidelines, the Nigerian was deployed down the right to keep an eye on Kyle Walker-Peters but went close with a shot from outside the area shortly after his side went ahead.

Demarai Gray 6

Set up Onana’s opener with an outswinging corner-kick, looked a threat when running at Southampton’s defence but earlier squandered a decent chance when fed by Mykolenko.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6

Came tantalisingly close to restoring Everton’s lead when his shot deflected off Ibrahima Diallo and onto Southampton’s crossbar

Anthony Gordon (on 69 for Coleman) 5

Reckless and unnecessary foul on Che Adams to concede the free-kick from which Ward-Prowse netted his second.

Ellis Simms (on 82 for Gueye)

Late run-out as Everton pushed for an equaliser.
