Everton New Stadium 'Flood' Explained After Footage Emerges

Footage showing water flowing through Everton’s under-construction stadium surfaced on social media Thursday evening, raising alarm among fans eager for the club’s new home to be completed.

However, the club has assured supporters that the incident is nothing to worry about, attributing the situation to unfinished drainage systems and severe weather caused by Storm Darragh.

The video, which was widely shared online on Thursday, showed water gushing down stairwells and seating areas within the new stadium.

With Everton’s planned departure from Goodison Park set for the summer of 2025 and their £750 million waterfront stadium nearing completion, fans feared significant setbacks.

The new stadium, boasting a capacity of 52,888, is set to become the eighth-largest in England and host matches during Euro 2028.

The Club’s Explanation

Everton responded quickly, explaining that the issue was a result of the ongoing construction and not a structural problem.

The stadium has yet to be fitted with its complete Siphonic drainage system, which is designed to handle large amounts of water efficiently.

This system, once operational, will draw water from the roof and channel it away at high speed, preventing the kinds of flows seen in the footage.

According to the club, a similar incident occurred earlier this year during heavy rainfall, with no lasting damage reported.

Construction teams are actively addressing the drainage system, with all necessary installations expected to be completed in the coming weeks as the project moves toward its final stages.

The Impact of Storm Darragh

Storm Darragh, the fourth named storm of the season, has been battering parts of the UK, bringing gusts of up to 80 mph and heavy rain.

Liverpool and its surrounding areas were no exception, with intense weather conditions contributing to the temporary flooding at the stadium.

While the storm caused concerns for those in flood-prone areas, the rainfall totals from Darragh were not expected to match those of earlier storms like Storm Bert.

Nevertheless, the extreme weather added pressure to construction sites and infrastructure across the affected regions.
