Everton named as possible destination for out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay

Everton could reportedly be tempted to move for out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this summer as Sean Dyche looks to avoid another Premier League relegation battle.

Last season saw the Blues retain their ever-present Premier League status and avoid a first relegation in 52 years as they defeated AFC Bournemouth on the final day of the campaign thanks to a wonder strike from midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure. It was the second consecutive season that the club has been embroiled in a fight for survival, with the 2021/21 season seeing former manager Frank Lampard steer Everton to a 16th-place finish.

In a bid to ensure what is likely to be the final full season at Goodison Park ends on more acceptable terms, Everton have been linked with a number of players to address the faults in their squad. Strikers Wout Weghorst and Beto of Burnley and Udinese respectively have both linked with moves to Merseyside as back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

However, according to both The Athletic and Football Insider, McTominay could be on the radar of the Blues this summer with the Scotsman falling out of favour under manager Erik Ten Hag.

The 26-year-old started just 16 games in all competitions for the Red Devils as United secured Carabao Cup glory and a return to the Champions League with a third-place finish in the Premier League. The arrivals of Casemiro and Marcel Sabitzer in recent windows has seen McTominay's status diminish to that of a bit-part player, while the anticipated signing of Mason Mount is expected to continue that trend.

According to The Athletic, Everton and Newcastle United both hold an interest in the versatile operator, with the Magpies reportedly making an audacious loan enquiry during the January transfer window. Elsewhere, Football Insider credits both sides and West Ham United with strong interest, with sources at Old Trafford reportedly telling the publication that McTominay is prepared to leave his boyhood club this summer "for the good of his career".

Despite having two years remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, it is claimed a deal for McTominay could cost "in the excess" of £20m.

Since making his debut in 2017, Mctominay has made over 200 appearances for United while establishing himself as a Scotland international.
