Everton make surprise change against Southampton as Dominic Calvert-Lewin decision made

Anthony Gordon is on the bench for Everton at Southampton today with Dwight McNeil replacing the winger.

Gordon does not make the first XI following his return from international duty with England Under-21s. The Blues' No.10 has been feeling ill. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose chances of being involved appeared to be played down by Frank Lampard ahead of the trip to St Mary's, is not in the squad. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford does, however, return.

Seamus Coleman will captain Everton as he starts in the league for the first time this season. The club captain replaces Nathan Patterson after the defender was injured on international duty with Scotland. Coleman becomes the third player to take the armband for the Blues during this campaign, with Pickford and Conor Coady having already had the honour.

It is the first time the Republic of Ireland international has started in the Premier League since the dramatic comeback win over Crystal Palace that secured the club's top-flight survival, though the 33-year-old did play against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup earlier this season after recovering from surgery over the summer.

Pickford returns to the starting line-up, as expected, following his thigh injury, while Neal Maupay retains his spot in the first XI after his match-winning heroics against West Ham United.

Despite the changes to the side that clinched Everton's first win of the Premier League campaign, Lampard looks set to continue with the 4-3-3 formation that he switched to at Leeds United and has retained since. Academy product Kyle John makes the bench for the Blues as back-up for Coleman.

Everton team: Pickford, Coleman, Tarkowski, Coady, Mykolenko, Gueye, Iwobi, Onana, Gray, Maupay, McNeil. Subs: Begovic, Keane, Gordon, Doucoure, Davies, Vinagre, Rondon, Garner, John.
