Everton 'make contact' with Wayne Rooney as Farhad Moshiri 'considers' new option

Everton's search for their next manager continues today following the sacking of Rafa Benitez after defeat to Norwich City on Sunday.

The ECHO understands that Everton are exploring the possibility of bringing Roberto Martinez back to Goodison Park, however, a deal to bring him to the club has reportedly been stalled.

Martinez, who is currently in charge of Belgium, has support in the Everton boardroom and was under discussion in the summer before Benitez was hired - with Farhad Moshiri opting to go with the former Liverpool boss.

Martinez is not the only man to be linked with the job though, as another candidate has been named.

Here, we have taken a look at the latest rumours around who could be Everton’s next manager.

Who?

Vitor Pereira

What?

Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol has claimed that Farhad Moshiri is now considering Vitor Pereira for the Everton manager’s job, as he told the Transfer Show.

The reporter first shared that Mourinho himself is being discussed, before adding that there is ‘no way’ the Roma boss will leave the Serie A.

Whilst Everton won’t be getting Mourinho, it seems as though another Portuguese coach is on Everton’s radar in the form of Pereira.

Pereira was considered and interviewed by Everton in 2013 when David Moyes left the club, before Martinez was hired.

Pereira was recently sacked by Fenerbahce.

Who?

Wayne Rooney

What?

The Times' Paul Joyce reported that Everton have made contact with Wayne Rooney after days of speculation linking the former player with a sensational return as manager.

Currently enduring a difficult time amid Derby County going into administration, Rooney has done an admirable job as manager keeping the cub competitive in the Championship with severe financial limitations along with having key players stripped away from the club.

Former Everton striker Louis Saha has backed Rooney to take over as boss, stating that he's ready for the challenge.

Who?

Duncan Ferguson

What?

The caretaker boss will continue to take training as Everton prepare to face Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa on Saturday.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has backed Ferguson as the 'ideal person' to manage them ahead of this weekend's game.

Pickford said: "Training has been brilliant, everyone respects him and he is the ideal person to lead us out on Saturday.

“The respect the players have for him, we will work our socks off for him and do everything he wants on the pitch. He will make sure we are hard to beat but will want us to get the ball in the box and create opportunities."
