Everton goalkeeper sends touching message to Gary Lineker as BBC coverage hit by staff boycott

Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has thanked Gary Lineker for 'speaking up for the people with no voice' and 'the most vulnerable people out there'.

Lineker was told to step down from presenting Match of the Day on Friday after the broadcaster took exception to comments he made about the government's controversial new asylum policy earlier in the week.

The BBC's flagship football show was then thrown into crisis after its regular commentators joined a boycott of the programme in solidarity with Lineker. Earlier on Friday afternoon, pundits Ian Wright and Alan Shearer also pulled out last night’s show.

The row began after the announcement on Tuesday of Government plans to make asylum claims inadmissible from those who make their way to Britain on 'small boats'. Lineker, tweeting in response, said that it was an 'immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s'.

And taking to Twitter on Saturday night, Begovic moved to tweet his thanks to Lineker for the support he has shown towards refugees.

He wrote: “@GaryLineker thank you for speaking up for the people with no voice and the most vulnerable people out there. Your support for @Refugees is always appreciated. The solidarity from the football community is a beautiful thing.”
