Everton fan 'left for dead' sends message from Spanish hospital

An Everton fan has sent a "small message of gratitude" after being "left for dead" in Spain.

Steen Nodwell, who is originally from Liverpool, is said to have been on holiday with friends in Salou on Friday night when he was pursued by a group of men. The 29-year-old, who now lives in Somerset, says he was attacked then pushed off a cliff, leaving him with a number of serious injuries including a fractured skull and two broken arms.

His sister Bethan says he is now stranded in a Spanish hospital in nearby Tarragon where he has had to have a number of operations. A fundraising page has been set up as Steen's family says they face huge costs for his medical care and to get him home.

Steen wrote an emotional thank you to people for their support earlier this week. Taking to Facebook, he said: "Just want to say a quick thank you to all the people who have helped in anyway and continue to do so.

"I am eternally grateful it took a lot of heart to lift myself from the crevasse of that mountain. I think all of your heart was right there with me!

"It makes me so emotional just to hear but a few things you guys are doing, thank you so, so much. I still haven't even began my recovery and in truth it's not easy writing this with two broken arms, but I had to send a small message of gratitude. Thank you so much."

Writing on the GoFundMe page she set up, Bethan said Steen was "chased and brutally attacked" by a "gang of local men". She said: "They threw him off a cliff. It is only through sheer determination and courage that my brother, despite his life threatening injuries, managed to get up and walk for help.

Steen, Bethan said, cannot fly home and will therefore have to return by car with medical assistance - which the family expects to be costly. Bethan continued: "Not only that but Steen needs help and support from his family who will need to be with him, meaning travel expenses are soon going to mount up."
