Everton 'enquire' about Atletico Madrid star amid competition from three Premier League rivals

Everton are one of several Premier League clubs to have enquired about Matheus Cunha, according to Spanish outlet Relevo.

The Toffees are said to have joined the likes of Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United in their interest of the Atletico Madrid striker who has fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone. Cunha signed for the Spanish side in August 2021 and scored six goals last season, but he has seen his minutes limited recently amid competition with Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann.

Prior to his move to Spain, the Brazilian enjoyed a strong season with Hertha Berlin with eight goals and seven assists in 28 games through 2020/2021. Such form prompted Atleti to cough up around €26million for his services, but despite a promising start to life in Madrid, the 23-year-old has never quite matched expectations and his game-time has suffered as a result.

The Spanish report suggests that Cunha - who was left out of Brazil's World Cup squad as a result of his lack of game time - is expected to leave Atleti in January, although whether that will be a permanent sale or a loan-to-buy option in unknown. Spanish radio station Cadena SER reported over the weekend that Atleti have 'an agreement' to sell Cunha to Wolves, made possible by his agent Jorge Mendes who has overseen the arrival of several players at Molineux.

But Relevo state that while Wolves are undoubtedly favourites, the race remains open with Everton one of several clubs keeping tabs on developments ahead of a January move. Cunha's current contract runs until 2026, quashing hope of a cut-price deal, but the forward's apparent willingness to leave, coupled with the Spanish side's need to meet Financial Fair Play regulations after being knocked out of the Champions League earlier than expected, makes a deal possible.

Everton have been badly in need of attacking reinforcements throughout the first-half of the season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin continually sidelined with injuries. Frank Lampard's side are the joint second-lowest scorers in the league with 11 goals, and their failure to find the net in any of their last three league matches will no doubt be of concern to the Blues boss.
