The Premier League has had another dramatic transfer window, but rather than consign it to the past and get on with the season at hand, we’re addressing the season’s burning question: In the Premier League’s 30 years, who is the greatest transfer of all time?
As part of our special award to celebrate the Premier League’s anniversary, Everton seized two nominations in Tim Cahill and Seamus Coleman .
The regularity with which Cahill found the back of the net was startling in itself, but the Australian’s proclivity for scoring on the biggest of occasions and never failing to provide a Cahill-certified celebration in the aftermath will never fail to ignite a happy pang of nostalgia for Toffees fans.
His 68 goals and 29 assists in 278 appearances offer numerical evidence of his near preternatural ability to find the back of the net so consistently, but for a mere £2m, Cahill’s talent constantly belied itself. That he could instil fear into opponents with a nickname like Blue Kangaroo was only further testament to his inimitable prowess.
Nevertheless, if any transfer is the epitome of a bargain buy, Coleman is it. Standing at a ludicrous £60,000, the Irishman has gone on to make 329 appearances for Everton.
In all, it rounds out to roughly £182 per appearance for the left-back (or a pair of third-generation Apple Airpods, tax included). The longevity in itself is a marvel, but the assurance and tenacity exuded by Coleman has often proved a cornerstone in Everton’s success.
