Everton dealt Ben Godfrey injury blow in Frank Lampard's first game in charge

Frank Lampard's reign as Everton manager has been dealt an early blow with Ben Godfrey pulling up injured in the game with Brentford.

The FA Cup fourth-round tie was less than 12 minutes old when Blues defender Godfrey was forced off with what looked like a calf problem.

Moments earlier the £20m man had pressed high up the pitch to force a turnover but quickly began to hobble, because of the apparent calf problem.

Godfrey, who was replaced by Yerry Mina, needed assistance from the medical team to be helped off the pitch.

But the blow was softened when Mina headed Everton into a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

Godfrey, who began the tie on the left of a back three, is almost certain to have started for the Blues in Lampard's opening Premier League match on Tuesday night at Newcastle United.

But the pain the defender was in, means he looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
