Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi is expected to be out for around three weeks with the ankle ligament injury sustained against Manchester United on Friday. The Nigerian international was taken off on a stretcher early in the second half of the FA Cup third round tie at Old Trafford which the Blues would lose 3-1 after being caught by Tyrell Malacia when chasing the ball.
Scan results on Saturday confirmed a lateral ligament injury that will be managed conservatively by the club’s medical team at Finch Farm. The 26-year-old has played in all 21 of Everton’s matches in all competitions so far this season, starting every game apart from the 4-1 Carabao Cup exit at Bournemouth when he came off the bench.

A £28million signing from Arsenal on the final day of the 2019 summer transfer window, Iwobi struggled in terms of both form and finding a regular position under Marco Silva, Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez but after previously being deployed as a winger, wing-back and number 10 under previous bosses, he has become a mainstay in the side as a central midfielder under Frank Lampard who last month claimed he was “close” to signing a new contract, along with Jordan Pickford and Anthony Gordon.
