Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2018: Laura Linney says she's 'still terrified' about being alone on stage

Laura Linney has said that she’s “still terrified” to be on stage alone in My Name is Lucy Barton.

Speaking on the red carpet at the 64th Evening Standard Theatre Awards, Linney said: “I’d never done a one person play before and it is a bonkers thing to do. I somehow survived it and I look forward to doing it again.”

Linney is shortlisted for the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress in partnership with Christian Louboutin for her role in the play, which sold out the Bridge Theatre in June.

She will return to Richard Eyre’s production in January.

She said of the return: “I’m still terrified. It’s a frightening thing to be up there alone for a long period of time but the material is so glorious and the language is so beautiful and I love being here. I love the audiences here, I love everybody at the Bridge Theatre, so I’m happy as a clam to be here.”

My Name is Lucy Barton sees Linney perform a one-woman monologue about a woman who wakes up after an operation to find her estranged mother at the end of her bed.

Also shortlisted for the Best Actress award are Carey Mulligan, Cecilia Noble, Sophie Okonedo and Lia Williams.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, star and writer of Fleabag and creator of hit show Killing Eve, is presenting this year’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards ceremony. Actors Claire Foy and Idris Elba are co-hosting alongside Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour and the Evening Standard’s owner Evgeny Lebedev.

The awards are held in association with fashion label and official platinum partner Michael Kors.
