Evening Standard Comment: The Tories discover that levelling down London is no vote-winner

In the capital, the Conservatives are faring even worse than acorss the country. In an exclusive YouGov poll, we reveal the Tories have plunged to an astonishing 32 percentage points behind Labour.

That is the largest gap between the parties in a YouGov survey of the city for at least 12 years and, if maintained at a general election, would leave the Tories with only 13 MPs in the capital.

The cause is familiar. Many Londoners share the view of the rest of the country about Boris Johnson, with two-thirds believing the Prime Minister should resign over “partygate”. Yet there is a further aspect at play in a city where, let’s not forget, Boris Johnson won two mayoral elections.

There is a tangible sense that the Tories have, at best, little interest in addressing the capital’s needs and, at worse, a belief that levelling up in fact means levelling London down.

The constant attacks on the Mayor and hardball tactics over the future of Transport for London are viewed as evidence that the Government is more interested in playing politics than it is doing the basics to allow London to thrive.

If the Tories want to mount a fight back nationwide against a resurgent Labour Party, it would do well to start in the capital.
