Evening Standard Comment: London stands ready to house Ukrainian refugees

This is what is meant by “London is Open”. After only a few hours of the website going live, thousands had registered to house Ukrainian refugees fleeing war, as part of the Government’s new Homes for Ukraine scheme.

It is a testament to the generosity and spirit of this city. From people with large houses to those who can offer a precious spare bedroom, so many are doing their bit to bring light to one of Europe’s darkest moments.

Business too has a role. Both in directly sponsoring visas and providing employment for refugees. While UK unemployment has fallen to 3.9 per cent, its lowest level since before the pandemic, the capital’s firms have many vacancies and business leaders must work with the Government to reach out to those coming to Britain.

But more than providing life’s necessities — shelter, food and clothing — London will offer a fulsome welcome. That will include support for getting children into schools, integration with civil society groups, access to GPs and banking and, critically, mental health support for those suffering from the traumas of war.

The capital is home to the largest Ukrainian population in the country, and we will receive many more. To Ukrainians coming to the capital for however long, London says: welcome to your new home.
