Evan Ferguson looks set for a shorter-than-expected spell on the sidelines - and could even make Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against France.
The Brighton striker has somehow managed to avoid serious injury in the aftermath of Fabinho’s shocking challenge late in Sunday’s FA Cup win over Liverpool.
It was initially feared that he damaged his achilles, ankle or knee - or all three - when the Brazilian dug his studs into the back of his leg, just above Ferguson’s boot.
He had to be helped off the pitch and left the stadium on crutches, wearing a knee brace.
However, the 18-year-old has reportedly been told that there is no ligament damage - either ACL or medial - to the knee, and that he instead suffered bone bruising.
He could be back in action in a matter of weeks, which would be a huge relief to Ireland boss Stephen Kenny.
Ferguson has been tipped to feature in the friendly against Latvia and in the opening Euro 2024 qualifier at home to France in late March.
His stunning form since the turn of the year, including three goals and two assists, has elevated him as one of the Premier League’s most exciting youngsters.
