Evacuation orders in Los Angeles County due to the Palisades and Eaton fires have impacted over 100,000 people, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff. As of the latest update, approximately 105,000 residents are under evacuation orders, while around 87,000 residents are under evacuation warnings.
During a news conference on Sunday, LA County Sheriff emphasized the importance of following evacuation orders, stating that the safety of residents is paramount. Sheriff Luna urged those in evacuation areas to leave promptly, emphasizing that their lives are at risk if they choose to stay.
Despite the challenges faced by residents in staying away from their homes, Sheriff Luna highlighted the unsafe conditions that persist in the affected areas. He described the scenes as resembling war zones, with downed power poles, electric wires, and lingering fires posing significant hazards.
Both fires continue to pose a threat, with the Eaton Fire covering 14,117 acres and being 15% contained, while the Palisades Fire has spread across 23,707 acres and is only 11% contained, according to Cal Fire.
The sheriff reiterated the importance of ensuring the safety of residents before allowing them to return home. While the desire is to facilitate the return of evacuees to their residences, it is crucial to wait until the conditions are deemed safe for reentry.
