Eva Longoria reveals she's fleeing 'dystopian' America following Donald Trump's election win

Eva Longoria - (PA Wire)

Eva Longoria has fled “dystopian” America after Donald Trump’s election victory, saying she is “privileged” to now be living in Mexico and Spain with her family.

The Hollywood star played Gabrielle Solis in all eight seasons of Desperate Housewives, which ran from 2004 to 2012.

The Texas-born actress, who had previously been based in Los Angeles, said she felt lucky to be able to “escape” the United States, saying if Trump keeps his promises it would become a “scary” place.

Speaking in an interview with Marie Claire magazine, the Flamin' Hot director, 49, said: “I get to escape and go somewhere.

“Most Americans aren't so lucky. They're going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”

Longoria, who had campaigned for Kamala Harris to win the presidency, has been living abroad with her son Santiago, 6, and her producer husband José Bastón as she works on her CNN miniseries Searching for Spain. It is a follow up to last year's Searching for Mexico.

The family are now splitting their time between Spain and Mexico.

In the cover interview for the magazine’s latest issue, she added: “The shocking part is not that he won...It's that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.

“'I would like to think our fight continues...If he keeps his promises, it's going to be a scary place.”

It comes as Trump announced a series of controversial nominations for key positions in his Government once it takes office in January.

He named Florida Senator Marco Rubio to be secretary of state, the country’s top diplomat, and Florida Representative Matt Gaetz to be the country’s new top prosecutor.

Mr Rubio, 53, is a noted hawk on China, Cuba and Iran, and was a finalist to be Trump's running mate on the Republican ticket last summer.

The announcement comes as Mr Rubio pivoted rightwards to be an ally of Trump, despite calling him a "con artist" during his unsuccessful campaign for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

Mr Gaetz, 42, is slated to serve as Trump’s attorney general, despite a House probe investigating allegations of sex trafficking, sexual misconduct and drug use.

The Trump loyalist resigned from Congress on Wednesday night, effectively ending the House Ethics Committee investigation. He has always vehemently denied any wrongdoing and no charges have ever been brought.

The Trump administration also named Tulsi Gabbard as their pick for director of national intelligence.

The Former Hawaii Representative was a Democratic House member who unsuccessfully sought the party's 2020 presidential nomination before leaving the party in 2022.

She endorsed Trump in August and campaigned often with him.
