Bucks Fizz singer Cheryl Baker has shared her advice to this year’s UK Eurovision entry Mae Muller. The singer, 25, will perform her track I Wrote A Song in Liverpool next week.
Cheryl famously won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with the UK group Bucks Fizz whose track, Making Your Mind Up, went on to be a massive hit.
In an interview ahead of the Eurovision 2023 event, she warned Mae: “Don’t read anything - there are always going to be the haters. There are always going to be people that relish in bringing you down. You can have hundreds of thousands of people patting you on the back and saying how amazing you are, but you’ll always remember that one nasty comment.” For the latest TV and showbiz news sign up to our newsletter here.

Cheryl continued in the interview with Entertainment Daily: “Don’t read the social media comments or the media comments – just enjoy the moment. Whether you win, finish in the top five or come last, which is not going to happen, just enjoy the moment. Enjoy the experience of being part of the biggest show on earth.
“There are always people that won’t like what you do – there are people that don’t like me – don’t read it. It can be really upsetting and it’s silly because some people just do it for a reaction.”
Eurovision is being hosted this year by Graham Norton, Hannah Waddingham, Mel Giedroyc, Scott Mills, Rylan Clark, Alesha Dixon, Sam Quek, Ukranian singer Julia Sanina and Ukranian presenter Timur Miroshnychenko. You can read more about that here.
Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022, a title which would usually mean the contestant's home country host the following competition, but due to the ongoing war the UK is hosting the event in Liverpool this year on behalf of Ukraine.
This year's Eurovision Song Contest Final airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday, May 13 at 8pm.
