Eurovision's Sam Ryder taken aback by Liverpool as he calls for permanent change

Sam Ryder heaped praise on Liverpool as he called for Eurovision change.

Eurovision fever has arrived in Merseyside as one of the world's greatest party events is underway. Sam's show-stopping performance of Spaceman has last year secured a second place finish in the competition and led to the UK hosting this year's event on behalf of Ukraine.

Sam has travelled up to Liverpool this week and is set to perform at the iconic Cavern Club today. He appeared on Wednesday's This Morning and said how the energy in the city sums up what makes Eurovision special.

He said: "There's a buzz. You can really feel it in Liverpool. People coming together around this thing that's meant to bring you together. It was never meant to cause arguments or be political."

Today's edition of This Morning was hosted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby. Sam told the presenters how the community spirit in Liverpool is a true representation of Eurovision and explained this shows why Eurovision should no longer be referred to as a contest.

He said: "Across Europe, they call it the song festival. I think it's such a more fitting name. It feels like a carnival, like a festival when you're here. It takes the teeth out of that aspect of it.

"Let's be real, the element of the scoreboard is for entertainment purposes only. You can't score music. You can't score Bob Dylan against The Beatles, Iron Maiden or Whitney Houston. It's expression and you can't score that."
