European transfer news: Cristiano Ronaldo update as Barcelona make fresh plans

Cristiano Ronaldo and Matthijs de Ligt are the main names making the headlines across Europe as the transfer window gets set to go into overdrive.

Juventus defender De Ligt was locked in talks with Chelsea before opting to join Bayern Munich - while Ronaldo could still be looking for a way out of Manchester United. As the temperature spikes in the UK, things will continue to heat up in the transfer market across the continent.

De Ligt spotted in Bayern kit

Matthijs de Ligt has been spotted in Bayern Munich training kit amid his €80m move on a five-year contract from Juventus.

The 22-year-old Dutch centre back is ready for the next stage of his career after three years in Turin, and will actually accept a small drop in salary. As reported by TMW, Bayern have agreed to pay Juventus €70m in a fixed fee plus around €10m in add-ons, and he will complete his medical tests this week.

Ronaldo latest

United continue to insist that Ronaldo is not for sale but Spanish club Atletico Madrid have been tipped to enter the race.

Atletico are the rivals of his former club Real Madrid, where Ronaldo scored 450 goals and won 15 pieces of silverware, including two La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies in nine years. However, according to Marca , there is little chance of a deal materialising this summer, despite discussions at some level having been held. The report says that Atletico have stated on numerous occasions that "it is not economically viable".

Fresh Barca transfer plans

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed the club will now look to target a new defender in the summer transfer window.

Barca have already brought in Andreas Christensen on a free transfer from Chelsea but most of their business has been at the other end of the field. Midfielder Franck Kessie and forwards Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski have joined, while Ousmane Dembele has signed a new contract to stay at Camp Nou as well.

Laporta has now revealed that Barcelona are finished in attack and will now look to strengthen their defence over the next few weeks. "Now it's time to work on the defence," Laporta told TUDN. "My dream is for Barça to become a world reference again and we are working for it. We are achieving it, but we have to work even more. Football does not wait. You have to do it now."
