European Championships boxing: Co Down teen guaranteed medal in Armenia

Co Down boxer Dylan Eagleson proved his class once again on Friday to guarantee himself a medal at the European Championships.

Eagleson outclassed Gabriel Masunano Escobarto to secure at least a bronze at the major competition in Armenia.

The 19-year-old has already forged a burgeoning reputation in the amateur ranks, and will also be a part of Northern Ireland's squad heading to this summer's Commonwealth Games.

Eagleson - who fights out of St Paul's in West Belfast - had to dig deep after losing the opening round against Escobarto.

But he went on to claim the next two stanzas to deservedly reach the semi-finals.

Eagleson has already been compared to Carl Frampton, not only for his boxing skills but for his appeal outside the ring.

It is his performances inside the ring where he will ultimately be judged, however, and he has fully embraced the European Championships, which is the teenager's first senior international competition.

Eagleson has already claimed a medal at the Under 22 Europeans and will now be looking to add a gold or silver to his collection when he fights in the bantamweight semis this Sunday.
