Europe’s on fire! Ryder Cup golf heroes party until early hours

Europe’s Ryder Cup golf heroes partied into the night as they celebrated their victory against the USA in Italy.

Footage from the team coach showed Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy belting out a version of “Europe’s on fire, USA is terrified!” as he drank Champagne from the trophy.

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre gave a rendition of The Proclaimers’ I Gonna Be (500 Miles), as the players made their way from the Marco Simone Golf Club to a party in Rome.

He waved his European cap in apparent reference to the “Hatgate” saga that had surrounded the tournament after US player Patrick Cantlay was said to have refused to wear a team cap at frustration at not being paid for taking part.

England’s Tyrrell Hatton was described as the “last man standing” as a picture of him was posted on the Team Europe account on X in the early hours holding a beer in light-up glasses and team pyjamas.

While Ireland’s Shane Lowry looked a little bleary-eyed as he smiled in a picture of him surrounded by the trophy and empty bottles captioned “Goodnight/good morning” posted at 3.30am.

Europe won back the Ryder Cup by 16½ points to 11½ on Sunday afternoon in a tense finale to the three-day contest.

It came after a humbling record 19-9 defeat to the USA two years ago.
