Europa League roundup

Fenerbahce sealed their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a 5-2 aggregate win over Anderlecht, having drawn 2-2 in an interrupted second leg in Belgium on Thursday, while Ajax scraped through against Union Saint-Gilloise.

Former champions Ajax conceded early against the Belgian club and had Davy Klaassen sent off before Union scored again to send the tie to extra time. A Kenneth Taylor penalty for the Dutch side in the 93rd minute was enough for them to advance 3-2 on aggregate. José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce scored in the fourth minute at Anderlecht but the players had to leave the pitch because of crowd disturbances. The match resumed 20 minutes later and ended 2-2, with the Turkish side advancing 5-2 overall.

The Czech side Viktoria Plzen beat Hungary’s Ferencvaros 3-0 for a 3-1 aggregate victory while Luka Sucic scored twice as Real Sociedad thrashed Midtjylland 5-2 on the night and 7-3 on aggregate.

Earlier, Roma progressed with a 3-2 home win over 10-man Porto thanks to a Paulo Dybala double, advancing 4-3 on aggregate. Galatasaray crashed out to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar 6-3 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw.

Steaua Bucharest also advanced with a 2-0 win over Paok at home, sealing a 4-1 aggregate victory while Norway’s Bodø/Glimt continued their fairytale run with a 5-2 extra time win over FC Twente to progress 6-4 on aggregate.

It’s been a long night so we’re going to wrap things up. Thanks for your company, goodnight.

Full time: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg 1-1; 4-5 pens)

Hestad scores and Molde go through! Eirik Hestad seals victory with another excellent penalty, passed into the bottom-right corner. Shamrock Rovers’ dream of reaching the last 16 has gone, at least for now, but with players like the remarkable Michael Noonan it may well come again.

McEneff scores! Shamrock Rovers 4-4 Molde

Straight down the middle. Molde will hve to serve it out.

Daga scores! Shamrock Rovers 3-4 Molde

Shamrock Rovers must score their fifth penalty or they will be out.

O’Reilly-O’Sullivan scores! Shamrock Rovers 3-3 Molde

Another superb penalty, whipped into the top corner.

Enggard scores! Shamrock Rovers 2-3 Molde

Another excellent penalty. Shamrock Rovers are in trouble now.

Karlstrom saves! Shamrock Rovers 2-2 Molde

A poor penalty from Aaron Greene is saved to his left by Karlstrom. Molde have the advantage.

Halldor Stenevik has scored a majestic penalty to make it 2-2 in Dublin.

Full time in extra time: Ajax 1-2 Union SG (agg: 3-2)

In their proud 125-year history, Ajax have never celebrated a home defeat quite like this. They were in huge trouble after half an hour, when they were down to 10 men and had seen their two-goal lead from the first leg wiped out. But Ajax held on, somehow – Union SG has 32 attempts at goal – and won the tie through Kenneth Taylor’s penalty at the start of extra time.

Their reward is a match against Lyon or Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 16.

Shamrock lead Molde 2-1 on penalties; Michael Noonan, 16, has just scored with frankly absurd composure.

Shamrock Rovers have scored their first penalty. Meanwhile Union SG have 10 players in the Ajax penalty area for a corner; it’s their last chance. The match is into the seventh of four added minutes.

Updated

Full time in extra time: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg: 1-1)

Shamrock’s hopes of making history rest on a penalty competition. Whatever happens, please don’t let one of the kids miss the decisive penalty.

115 min: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg: 1-1) Molde have managed extra-time really well in the circumstances. It’s surely heading for penalties.

108 min: Ajax 1-2 Union SG (agg 3-2) Ajax are under constant pressure. Union SG have had 24 attempts at goal, eight on target, and an xG that’s through the roof. But as things stand they’re going out.

Half time in extra time: Ajax 1-2 Union SG (agg: 3-2) Ten-man Ajax are 15 minutes away from a defiant victory.

Half time in extra time: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg 1-1) Plenty of pressure from Shamrock Rovers towards the end of the first period of extra time, but still no clear chances.

Full time: Anderlecht 2-2 Fenerbahce (agg: 2-5)

Jose Mourinho’s side will play Olympiacos or Rangers in the last 16 after a 2-2 draw in Anderlecht. The match was delayed for 20 minutes in the first half because of a security issue; I’m sure we’ll find out exactly what happened after the game.

98 min: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg 1-1) Shamrock Rovers are struggling to make their man advantage count. A rugged arm-wrestle of a tie may need to be decided by penalties.

GOAL! Ajax 1-2 Union SG (agg 3-2, Taylor 93 pen)

Kenneth Taylor sends the keeper the wrong way from the spot, a really good penalty.

Updated

92 min: PENALTY TO AJAX! Another twist right at the start of extra-time. The former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess penalised for handball and Ajax have the chance to go ahead on aggregate.

GOAL! Panathinaikos 2-0 Vikingur Reykjavik (agg 3-2, Tete 90+4)

Late drama in Greece, where Tete has won the tie for Panathinaikos with a superb finish.

Full time: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg: 1-1)

Extra time it is, but that red card makes Shamrock Rovers favourites to go through.

RED CARD! Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg 1-1)

Molde are down to 10 men, just as they were last week Isak Amundsen has been given a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Aaron McEneff.

GOAL! Real Sociedad 5-2 Midtjylland (agg 7-3, Oskarrson 90)

A simple finish, volleyed in from four yards.

No, they’re not. Yusuf Akcicek heads in from a corner to restore Fenerbahce’s three-goal lead.

GOAL! Anderlecht 2-1 Fenerbahce (agg 2-4; Vazquez 55)

Luis Vazquez’s second goal has given Anderlecht – who were 4-0 down on aggregate – an outside chance of a miracle. There’s a fair way to go in that game as well.

Once upon a time Jose Mourinho’ steam hardly ever lost a one-goal lead. Surely they’re not going to lose a four-goal lead.

GOAL! Real Sociedad 4-2 Midtjylland (agg 6-3, Oyarzabal 73 pen)

Midtjylland have had a man sent off as well, so this tie is surely over.

69 min: Shamrock Rovers 0-1 Molde (agg: 1-1) Michael Noonan is bundled over just outside the area by Isak Amundsen, who is booked. Shamrock Rovers are having an excellent spell, possibly their best of the match. Before that Molde looked the likelier winners; now I haven’t a clue.

Half time: Anderlecht 1-1 Fenerbahce (agg: 1-4) Fenerbahce are heading for the last 16, but that’s not the story. We’re still trying to verify reports about the cause of the fight that led to the game being suspended. TNT Sports say there were “as yet unspecified security issues”.

Updated

“It feels like there were a pleasing number of bumbling farcical goals in the last 45 minutes,” says Adam Berry. “Fenerbahce, Anderlecht, Sociedad, Molde - I think La Real’s is my favourite so far for the sheer exasperation of the goalie as the defender tumbled over, but there’s been strong competition. Here’s hoping for another helping of haplessness in the second halves!”

GOAL! Real Sociedad 3-2 (agg: 5-3; Sucic 45+2)

Luka Sucic’s second goal gives Sociedad a bit of a cushion. It’s harsh on Jonas Lossl, who had just made a couple of outstanding saves.

24 min: Anderlecht 1-1 Fenerbahce (agg; 1-4) Incidentally, Anderlecht’s equaliser was comedy goal, worth trying to find online.

As I type, En-Nesyri has been booked for the slighest head-on-head contact with the goalkeeper, who went down pathetically.

19 min: Anderlecht 1-1 Fenerbahce The match was suspended because a fight broke out between the two sets of supporters. There are some unpleasant suggestions as to what started the fight; it’s not ours to speculate but we’ll report what happened as soon as it’s verified.

A cracking finish from Dario Osorio has given Midtjylland real hope in Spain.

GOAL! Plzen 2-0 Ferencvaros (agg: 2-1; Sulc 35)

GOAL! Ajax 0-2 Union SG (agg: 2-2; David 27)

A lovely, cool penalty from Promise David brings Union SG level on aggregate – and they have a man advantage.

GOAL! Plzen 1-0 Ferencvaros (agg: 1-1; Durosinmi 28)

All square in this one.

RED CARD AND A PENALTY TO UNION SG!

25 min: Ajax 0-1 Union SG Davy Klaassen makes an outstanding, instinctive save. The trouble is he’s not the goalkeeper, so it’s a clear penalty and red card. Ajax are in all sorts.

GOALS! Real Sociedad 2-1 Midtjylland (agg: 4-2; Sucic 18, Buksa 24 pen)

Adam Buksa’s penalty gives Midtjylland a bit of hope in Spain, though Sociedad were well on top until that point.

NO GOAL! Ajax 0-1 Union SG

Boufal was offside so, although the ball hit two Ajax players before reaching him, the goal has been disallowed.

GOAL! Ajax 0-2 Union SG (agg: 2-2; Boufal 19)

I say! Union SG are level in the tie after scoring twice in four minutes. Sofiane Boufal took advantage of some wretched defending to score.

GOAL! Ajax 0-1 Union SG (agg: 2-1; Mac Allister 16)

There could be a twist in Amsterdam. Kevin Mac Allister, brother of Alexis, has given Union SG the lead on the night with a cracking header. It was extremely tight for offside but the semi-automated system gave Mac Allister the all-clear.

GOAL! Bodo/Glimt 4-2 Twente (agg: 5-4; Fet 111)

GOAL! Real Sociedad 1-0 FC Midtjylland (agg: 3-1; Mendez 5)

A farcical goal, one for the books. Mads Bech Sorensen and the keeper Jonas Lossl leave the ball to each other, then Sorensen slips over in the comedy style. Brais Mendez accepts the gift, passing the ball almost sheepishly into an empty net.

GOAL! Roma 3-1 Porto (agg: 4-2; Pisilli 83)

And surely all over in Rome. Angelino’s sharp cutback is finished nicely by the substitute Niccolo Pisilli to double Roma’s aggregate lead.

GOAL! FCSB 2-0 PAOK (agg: 4-1; Miculescu 81)

All done in Buchartest. A corner is turned in at the far post by David Miculescu to put FCSB 2-0 up on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.

77 min: Roma 2-1 Porto (agg: 3-2) A reminder that the winners of this game will play – oh yes – either Athletic Bilbao or Lazio.

GOAL! Galatasaray 2-2 Alkmaar (agg: 3-6; Sallai 70)

Two down, three to go for Galatasaray. Roland Sallai has brought them level on the night with the aid of some, a-hem, imperfect goalkeeping from Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.

69 min: Roma 2-1 Porto (agg: 3-2) Samu has hit the post for Porto! I thought he was being fouled by N’Dicka – which would have meant a red card – but play continued and he struck the shot while losing his balance. He kicked it onto his standing foot, after which it bounced over Svilar and off the post.

The comeback starts here. Victor Osimhen takes his frustration out on the football, thrashing an unsaveable shot into the net from 15 yards.

GOAL! Galatasaray 0-2 Alkmaar (agg: 1-6; Kasius 55)

Galatasaray are suffering a rare old humiliation. The substitute Denso Kasius has smashed in a belter from 25 yards to put Alkmaar 6-1 ahead on aggregate.

GOAL! Bodo/Glimt 1-1 Twente (agg: 2-3; Hogh 56 pen)

Bodo/Glimt have fresh hope thanks to a nerveless penalty from Kasper Hogh.

RED CARD! Roma 2-1 Porto (agg: 3-2)

Porto are down to 10 men in peculiar circumstances. Stephen Eustaquio was sent off after a VAR check for throwing a half punch at Leandro Paredes, who tried to block him off the ball. It was more of a get-off gesture from Eustaquio, but he did it with a closed fist and that’s why he was in trouble. His fist brushed Paredes below the neck; Paredes went down holding his face and was booked for simulation, which means he’ll miss the next game if Roma get through. That looks increasingly likely.

Two quickfire goals from Paulo Dybala – one beautiful, one merely excellent – has put Roma in front on aggregate against Porto. The other ties aren’t quite as close: FC Twente and FCSB have a two-goal lead, Alkmaar are sitting on a four-goal cushion in Istanbul.

GOAL! Galatasaray 0-1 Alkmaar (agg: 1-5; Makuma 42)

Welcome to heaven. AZ Alkmaar are cruising into the last 16 of the Europa League, having done a helluva number on one of the tournament favourties. After a superb run from Ernest Poku, Gabriel Sara’s attempted clearance hit Seiya Maikuma and ricocheted into the net.

GOAL! Roma 2-1 Porto (agg: 3-2; Dybala 39)

Roma’s magic man has done it again! Paulo Dybala found a fraction of space on the right side of the area, no more than that, and reversed an early shot that beat Diogo Costa at the near post! That’s another superb finish – not just the strike but the element of surprise. Diogo Costa started to put his weight on his right foot, expecting a shot towards the far corner, and that meant he couldn’t change direction quickly enough.

Paulo Dybala scores a beautiful equaliser for Roma! When he went off injured in the first leg it looked like he might out for while; Porto will wish that was the case.

Dybala picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, played a smooth one-two with
Eldor Shomurodov and scurried into the area. He held off a challenge, taking gentle touches all the while to ensure the ball didn’t get away from him, and then flicked a nonchalant finish over Diogo Costa with his left foot. I can hear Barry Davies in the mind’s ear: “Lovely goal! Lovely goal!”

GOAL! Roma 0-1 Porto (agg: 1-2; Samu 27)

Samu Aghehowa has put Porto ahead with a stunning goal! It stemmed initially from a wretched pass by the Roma keeper Mile Svilar that was intercepted on the edge of the area. He made partial amends with a good save, then a shot was blocked and Roma seemed to have got away with it. But then Samu flicked the ball up and hooked an overhead kick high into the net. That’s a belting goal.

GOAL! Bodo/Glimt 0-1 Twente (agg: 1-3; Sjovold own goal 26)

The first goal of the evening has been scored in Norway. Bodo/Glimt have been completely on top but it’s Twente who have taken the lead through an unfortunate own-goal. A corner from the right bounced up awkwardly, hit the unsighted Fredrik Sjovold on the head and flew into the net.

Shamrock Rovers have the chance to become the first Irish team to reach the last 16 of a European competition since Dundalk in 1979-80. To those who have been following Irish football in the last few years, it’s no great surprise.
