Georgia Stanway celebrates during the quarter-final match with Spain
(Picture: The FA via Getty Images)An England star has said the Lionesses will need “composure” to win as the team prepares for the Euro 2022 final at Wembley.
Georgia Stanway added it was time to “stop talking about how big women’s football is getting, and talk about how big it is” ahead of the team’s clash against Germany on Sunday evening.
Speaking to reporters, Stanway said among those trying to get tickets for the highly-anticipated game were the England men’s team.
In comments reported by Sky News, she joked: “Sorry lads, we’re all sold out!”
If England see victory at Sunday’s game, it will be the first time either senior national team have been crowned champions of a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.
"We need to stop talking about how big women’s football is getting, and talk about how big it is,” said Stanway,
“We’re just hitting new levels every single time, even if England aren’t playing, the TV figures are ridiculous."
Stanway also said that a key factor in determining England’s success would be “calmness and composure,” saying: “We know that Germany like to get out the traps and they like to put people under pressure and challenge their decision making.
“We just need to be even better on the ball, it’s down to us really."
England have had a storming sweep to the final, scoring 20 goals and conceding only one, against Spain in the quarter-finals.
After beating Spain, the side thrashed Sweden 4-0 at Bramall Lane in the semi-finals.
Tickets for Sunday’s final at Wembley have sold out, making it the most attended Euros game ever for either the men’s or women’s sides.
Stanway, who plays midfield, also praised head coach Sarina Wiegman, saying: "The biggest thing that Sarina Wiegman has said was at the start - ‘play for the little girl that wanted to be in our shoes’.
"So I’ll play for the little girl who wanted to play at the start, went to training, loved it, and dreamed to be in our position."
