Covid-hit England boss Sarina Wiegman has been undergoing daily testing in the hope she can return a negative one in time for Wednesday’s Euro 2022 quarter-final against Spain.
Wiegman (right) tested positive last week, forcing her to miss England’s final group game, which the Lionesses won 5-0 against Northern Ireland on Friday.
Assistant boss Arjan Veurink took charge of the side in Wiegman’s absence and could be forced to step up again for the last-eight showdown at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.
Wiegman is understood to be feeling better. Over the weekend, she observed training from a distance, wearing a mask. The 52-year-old is keeping in remote contact with her coaching team.
England tightened their Covid protocols as a result of Wiegman’s positive test, with a planned event for family and friends at the team base over the weekend cancelled.
Players were still able to go out and see family and friends, but any such meet-ups were advised to take place outdoors and on the proviso that visitors had provided a negative test.
England’s players are also having to deal with the extreme heat in London. With temperatures getting close to 40 degrees over the next two days, the squad planned to train earlier in the day and the medical staff had a hydration programme in place.
