The European Union has called on the Sudanese government to denounce the Russian invasion of Ukraine and back the countries that reject the military aggression.
Sudan’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali al-Sadiq reiterated his country’s firm stance on the situation in Ukraine and called on both parties to halt escalation and resolve the crisis by diplomatic means.
He made the remarks during a meeting with ambassadors of the European Union Delegation to Khartoum on Sunday.
The diplomats handed the minister a paper in which they expressed their collective condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
They also condemned the involvement of Belarus in this aggression and called on it to abide by its international obligations, the statement added.
Sadiq pointed out that the visit of Deputy Head of Sudan’s ruling council General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who is widely known as Hemedti, to Moscow was held before the crisis and aimed at discussing aspects of bilateral cooperation.
Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Sudan Ambassador Robert van den Dool, for his part, said he was honored to head a delegation consisting of the EU Ambassadors and Heads of Missions of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Italy to present the position of the European countries, also on behalf of the Troika (United Kingdom, United States of America and Norway), and Canada and Switzerland, on the developments in Ukraine.
“The Delegation met with the Acting Sudanese Foreign Minister and expressed condemnation in the strongest possible terms of the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by armed forces of the Russian Federation,” van den Dool said.
“We called on Sudan to join the group of nations and come out publicly in favor of the multilateral rules and based order and condemn in clear terms its violation by the Russian Federation.”
“We anticipate with great interest the Sudanese position in the UN General Assembly on the matter,” he stressed.
The ambassadors said they count on Sudan’s support to condemn in all relevant fora Russia’s military attack against Ukraine and to voice its support to the founding principles of international law and the international rules- based order, which have been violated by the Russia.
They further urged Sudan to join the international community in reaffirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity and stressing the need to find peaceful solution to conflicts and hold perpetrators of violations of international law accountable.
Van den Dool called on Sudan not to follow Russia’s illegal decision to recognize the proclaimed independence of the Donbas and Lugansk regions and discouraged other states from doing so.
“We also called on Sudan, as full member of the international community, to demand from Russia the immediate end of this aggression, which endangers international peace and security at a global scale.”
