Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor believes that Ukraine has a fighting chance against Russia, but they must have continued support from the U.S. and the EU to be successful. Despite facing setbacks, he says with European and US support, Ukraine has the potential to push back against Russian aggression.
Taylor indicated that the morale in Ukraine was boosted significantly this week with the European Union signaling a possible pathway for Ukraine’s membership. This diplomatic victory, however, does not diminish their need for material and military support.
In response to queries about how Russia may be utilizing the ongoing conflict to its benefit, Taylor acknowledged that the Russians had attempted to breach various parts of the line of contact, but have so far been repelled with significant losses. The Ukrainians, on the other hand, managed to force Russian military presence out of the western portion of the Black Sea, enabling them to resume exports, a significant economic achievement.
When asked about Ukrainian President Zelensky's recent pleas for aid from Capitol Hill and the White House, Taylor indicated these visits were important demonstrations of Ukraine's ongoing efforts and needs. He added that Zelensky was not anticipating immediate decisions or votes, but rather aimed to make his case to the largest possible audience, which he successfully achieved.
Finally, touching upon the basis for further support from the U.S. for Ukraine, Taylor suggests that a compromise is being sought within the Congress, addressing both support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion and related immigration and border security issues. A strong bipartisan backing for Ukraine exists, and despite some complications and delays, he is confident that more support will come, if not before the turn of the year, then certainly in the new year.
