Estate agent slammed for refusing to rent house to anyone unemployed or on benefits

An estate agent has been slammed for refusing to rent out a house to anyone who is unemployed.

The two-bed semi-detached home, which is being let for £595 per month in the village of Heage, Derby, is being sold by estate agents Your Move.

But staggeringly the property, which is also advertised on Rightmove, was excluding unemployed people, folk on benefits and students.

The property was only welcoming "employed or retired only" applications.

On the listing it mentions two fairly common restrictions for rented properties which included "strictly no pets" and "no smokers."

However, many renters were far from happy with the listing which only wanted "employed or retired" people.

The large house, which boasts a big lounge, kitchen diner, a conservatory and garage, and the property is located in a quiet cul-de-sac, has enough space for students or a young family.

One home hunter fumed at Your Move said: "For goodness sake, it is illegal to specify that a prospective tenant is employed.

"You cannot refuse to rent a property to someone who is on benefits or someone who has savings but is not employed.

"You know this. Take this advert down."

He also was unhappy with the property being listed on Rightmove and encouraged them to take down the listing.

The user said: "Rightmove, it is illegal to advertise a property to employed people only. This advert should be removed."

The shocking ban on out-of-work people is listed in the property restriction.

It reads: "Semi detached property, two bedrooms, spacious lounge, generous dining kitchen, conservatory to rear, private garden, off street parking, detached garage.

"Quiet cul-de-sac location, EPC rating D, unfurnished, employed or retired only, strictly no pets, no smokers, available now."

David Sykes, a director of the Your Move franchise, said: "Firstly I can confirm that this advert has been amended and the reference to employment status removed.

"It was incorrectly listed with applicant employment restrictions that we do not endorse.

"Having spoken to our lettings manager I can confirm this was an administrative error.

"This property was let by the branch a number of years ago and upon remarketing, the description wasn’t updated.

"As a franchise of Your Move, we operate a policy of inclusion and do not discount potential applicants based on their employment status.

"This advert does not reflect company policy and was amended immediately following the matter being brought to our attention."
