The Miami Dolphins aren’t exactly in the best cap situation as they head into an extremely important offseason that could be the deciding factor in the team winning a Super Bowl or bottoming out in the coming years.
Despite that, general manager Chris Grier and his staff should be hard at working scouting the talent that’s ready to hit the market from the 31 other teams because there could be some players that would flourish in South Florida.
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Matt Bowen released his list of the best fits for his top 50 NFL free agents, and the Dolphins were picked as the best fit for one outside free agent – defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
Here’s what Bowen said about the fit:
“With Dolphins edge rushers Bradley Chubb (torn ACL) and Jaelan Phillips (torn Achilles) both suffering season-ending injuries last season, Miami could shore up the unit with Clowney on a one-year deal. Last season in Baltimore, Clowney tied a career high with 9.5 sacks, and his 24.2% pass rush win rate ranked fifth in the NFL. He’s a speed-to-power rusher who can also set an edge against the run game.”
Not only would Clowney give Miami some wiggle room to make sure both Chubb and Phillips are fully healthy before returning next season, but he’d also be reuniting with new Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, who was Baltimore’s defensive line coach last season and also worked with Clowney in Houston (2016-18).
That familiarity could be a reason why the former top pick might be willing to come to the Dolphins on a one-year deal to try and make a playoff run. They’ll just need to find the money to pay him.
