The biggest story around the Georgia football team this fall will be the starting quarterback battle. Stetson Bennett is in the NFL now, so Georgia is looking for a new signal-caller.
Carson Beck is expected to compete with Gunner Stockton and Brock Vandagriff to see who will start at quarterback for the Bulldogs. None of Georgia’s three options at quarterback has a tremendous amount of experience.
Carson Beck, who is Georgia’s most experienced option, looked the best in the spring game, but Vandagriff and Stockton offer more mobility than Beck. All three quarterbacks are entering their first season with new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
ESPN predicts Carson Beck will win Georgia’s starting quarterback job in 2023.
Smart has been fairly conservative with his quarterback selections, in part because Georgia’s roster is so strong elsewhere. He prioritizes experience at the position and Beck brings the most. If Beck continues to operate the offense well against one of the nation’s most talented defenses, he should get the QB1 label for 2023.
We feel that Carson Beck is the favorite to win Georgia’s starting quarterback role, but Beck does not have the job locked up yet. Kirby Smart and Georgia went with Stetson Bennett over JT Daniels in the Dawgs’ most recent quarterback battle. A big reason why Bennett won the job was because of his mobility.
The importance of having a mobile quarterback in college should not be underestimated. Vandagriff and Stockton have much more to offer the Georgia rushing attack than Beck.
Georgia’s first two games of the season are against Tennessee-Martin and Ball State. The Bulldogs do not have to be fully set at quarterback until Week 3 at home against South Carolina.
