ESPN has named Georgia football’s sleeper ahead of the 2024 season. ESPN projects that Georgia defensive back Joenel Aguero, who we project to start at STAR, will be Georgia’s sleeper this fall.
“It’s difficult to pick a sleeper from a roster loaded with former five-star prospects, but safety Joenel Aguero was limited last season because of a hamstring injury he suffered in preseason camp,” said Mark Schlabach. “He had seven tackles and one pass breakup in 12 games, contributing mostly on special teams and on defense in the fourth quarter of blowouts.”
“He’ll be counted on this season to compete for one of the two safety spots vacated by Tykee Smith and Javon Bullard,” continued Schlabach. We would add that Aguero is most likely to take over Tykee Smith’s spot in the defense. Smith played STAR last season and forced the most turnovers of any player on the Georgia defense.
Aguero will have an opportunity to be around the ball a ton this year. The former elite recruit is very physical and could be the biggest hitter in this Georgia secondary.
