The Minnesota Vikings have had quite the offseason so far. They have moved on from some long-term veterans and could move on from more.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler labeled the Vikings as sellers and that’s not surprising in the slightest.
The Vikings are open for business as well. They’ve released three veteran players thus far — including legacy player Adam Thielen — and multiple teams believe Minnesota has had trade talks centered around running back Dalvin Cook. The team is attempting to re-sign Cook’s backup, Alexander Mattison, who is poised for a starter’s role somewhere. Safety Harrison Smith most likely needs to take a pay cut to remain with the team. He’s due $15 million-plus in cash and the Vikings are in clear scale-back mode.
The one thing from Fowler that is interesting is that the Vikings are looking to re-sign backup running back Mattison. Personally, I never found him to be all that impressive and re-signing him would likely be in the $5-6 million range, which would be too much. This rookie running back class is too good to pay a mid-range running back significant money.
What will come next for the Vikings? In the same article, Dan Graziano thinks that it might end up with the Vikings trading Kirk Cousins if the Jets strike out with Aaron Rodgers.
It’s going to be a wild few days.
