ESPN has MSU football ahead of rival UM in latest ‘Way-Too-Early’ rankings for 2022 season

Mark Schlabach of ESPN likes Michigan State a tad bit more than Michigan entering the 2022 season.

While many are considering Michigan the top competitor to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship race next season, Schlabach actually has Michigan State a spot above the Wolverines. He released an updated batch of way-too-early rankings for the 2022 season on Friday, which had Michigan State at No. 9 and one spot ahead of Michigan at No. 10.

Here’s a bit of what Schlabach had to say about Michigan State:

“After posting the biggest turnaround in school history, the Spartans spent the spring searching for Walker’s replacement and filling in key transfers on defense. Berger has already transferred from Wisconsin, and Broussard, who ran for 1,556 yards the past two seasons at Colorado, is expected to enroll in May.”

Both the Spartans and Wolverines are behind Ohio State who is at No. 2 in Schlabach’s rankings. The only other ranked team from the Big Ten was Iowa at No. 25.

The season is still more than three months away at this point, but this is still interesting to see nonetheless. I personally have Michigan State a tick below the Wolverines if I were to create preseason rankings but it’s not by much so I respect Schlabach’s decision to have it vice versa.
