Escaped Edinburgh gangster involved in pub shootout finally tracked down by cops

Officers have said that an escaped drug baron who absconded from HMP Castle Huntly in Dundee on Sunday 11 has been returned to prison.

It was feared that the crook had made his way to Edinburgh where he has multiple connections.

But Police Scotland have said that Sean McGovern, 29, has been traced and returned to prison after he was declared at large.

McGovern was sentenced to 17 years in prison after firing two rounds from a shotgun outside the Gauntlet Bar, in Broomhouse, Edinburgh, in 2008.

He received six years and nine months for the gun attack and 10 years for running a heroin empire in the capital.

On Friday June 16, police had re-appealed for information on the whereabouts of the 39-year-old who had escaped the Dundee prison five days prior.

Members of the public were warned not to approach the man but instead to contact law enforcement as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Sean McGovern, 39, who had absconded from HMP Castle Huntly, Dundee, on Sunday, 11 June, 2023 has been traced and returned to prison.

"He is due to appear at Perth Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 20 June, 2023.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
