Escape to the Country buyer in tears by Nicki Chapman's choice

A buyer on Escape to the Country was left in tears by Nicki Chapman's choice.

Nicki was helping retired designer Sarah and her husband Martin, the manager of a chemicals company, find a rural retreat on the BBC One show.

The couple have been married for 29 years and brought their two children up in a five-bedroom 1990s dwelling in Milton Keynes.

They had their hearts set on a move to Somerset, seeking a balance of character and open plan living with a budget of £500,000. Also on their wishlist was a large kitchen diner, a minimum of three bedrooms and an acre of land.

Nicki started the couple off with a 'chocolate box' cottage dating back to the 18th century, although Sarah was put off by the fact the property was semi-detached. She also saw challenges in the size of the bedrooms, but admitted it was "very pretty".

For the second home, Nicki took Sarah and Martin to a "stunning slice" of the Somerset countryside in the hamlet of Stapley.

Taking them to the rear of the 19th century thatched property, Sarah burst into tears as soon as she saw the "utterly charming" house.

Martin said: "I'm like a young child on Christmas morning about to rip open the paper and see what's inside." Sarah added: "It's so amazing. It's just everything."

Once inside, Sarah was already planning her perfect family Christmas in the property. She added: "When you find a house that you love it doesn't matter, you just make it work."

The couple did guess the house would be over budget, but it was bang on £500,000.

Nicki urged the couple to have an "open mind" for the mystery house, which she said "has a lot of potential". The barn was converted in 1999 but dates back to the 1800s and was on the market for £495,000.

However, Sarah and Martin's hearts were set on the second home. Martin said: "You instantly know when you look at a property and you're able to make compromises."

Nicki revealed that their offer on the home was later accepted.
