Escape to the Chateau fans left in tears just seconds into episode after Dick and Angel statement

Escape to the Chateau fans were left reaching for the tissues after the Strawbridge family shared a poignant goodbye. Monday evening's episode marked the final ever instalment of the Channel 4 favourite - and viewers were soon left fighting back tears, as reported by Birmingham Live.

Ahead of the episode, Dick Strawbridge and wife Angel Adoree signed off with kids Arthur and Dorothy. The family wrote: "Only a few hours to go until our Christmas Extravaganza! Today is a special day here for us, apart from being the coldest, it's the first day in as long as we can't quite remember, that we are relaxing and winding down for Christmas.

"Arthur and Dorothy broke up from school on Friday and yesterday was dedicated to getting the house stocked for Christmas and being taxis for the children's social lives, but today we go with the flow, and smell the roses. We can't quite believe tonight is the finale of Escape to the Chateau! What an incredible journey we have been on these last eight years."

The family added: "Thank you for being a part of it. We will be sitting down to watch as a family, which is another first as the children are normally in bed. We're sure there won't be a dry eye in the house as we reminisce over our Chateau adventure and re-watch all our family and friends kicking up their heels at our biggest Christmas party yet! We hope you enjoy the episode and we will be raising a glass to the end of a chapter, but most certainly not the end of the book."

Their doting fans were soon left flooding the comments section, too. One person penned: "Have a wonderful Christmas, cherish every moment with your loved ones and from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for inviting us into your home." Echoing their comments, someone else said: "Me and my family have watched every episode from the very beginning. It won't be the same without you as it's such family-friendly, uplifting TV which there isn't anywhere near enough of. Please come back on our screens with specials as we'd love to watch the journey unfold." While a third added: "Amazing show. Thank you for an amazing eight years! Go and enjoy yourselves now."

The couple appeared on ITV's Lorraine only last week, where they spoke about how emotional they felt while filming the last episode. Angel revealed: "We literally finished filming a week ago and it was really emotional. My mum kept crying all the time and it was really happy emotion. Arthur was sobbing. It was really beautiful, there's not many times where you get all your family and friends together. When it's a happy moment like that, boy it was a party."

On what the future holds, Angel concluded: "We are saying that it is the end of a chapter, not of a book. There's a lot to do," before detailing that the couple have only just started renovating their windows, adding: "It's going to be an ongoing project."
