Escape To The Chateau fans in tears as Channel 4 show airs final episode

Escape To The Chateau fans were left in tears after the popular Channel 4 programme aired its final ever episode on Sunday.

Dick Strawbridge and wife Angel Adoree announced in September that the ninth series would be their last and the final episode was aired on Sunday (December 18) with a Christmas finale which warmed the hearts of their loyal fans.

The reality TV show saw the married sell their two-bedroom Essex apartment and buy a rundown 19th-century French chateau in the market town of Martigne-sur-Mayenne.

The chateau had no electricity, plumbing or heating when they embarked on their new adventure in the winter of 2016 but viewers have seen the majestic building restored to its former glory over time by the hardworking couple.

The chateau is set within 12 acres of parkland, surrounded by a serene moat and has 45 rooms over five floors to provide the perfect backdrop for a vintage wedding - there is currently a two year waiting list.

However, with the chateau restored and their two young children - Arthur, nine, and Dorothy, eight - growing up, the couple felt it was time to stop production in a safety move for their family.

The final episode saw the family prepare for Christmas as they looked to go out with a bang as they wished to thank everyone who had helped renovate their home.

They hosted a big party in celebration and capped off the evening with a brilliant firework display to mark the end of a remarkable chapter in their lives.

Fans paid tribute to the family for letting them into their lives during their renovation of Chateau de la Motte-Husson.

One person wrote: "Omg I am crying at # escapetothechateau just beautiful, thank you @ @angeladoree for sharing your lovely family and journey with us all. Your inspiration that has inspired me. Happy Christmas to you all xxx."

Another commented: "Absolutely loved watching right from the start, was a little emotional at the end. Beautiful family and stunningly beautiful home, all your very hard work has well and truly paid off."

A third admitted: "I’m not going to lie, I may have let a little tear or two out at the final episode of #EscapeToTheChateau. @dickstrawbridge what have you done to me? I’m in pieces."

One fan revealed they were "inspired" by the couple, saying: "Crying after the final episode. I made my move to France inspired by Dick and Angel and it seems too sad to be saying goodbye to them."
