News broke on Sunday morning that the Los Angeles Rams granted Ernest Jones permission to seek a trade. That would imply Jones asked the Rams to trade him, but it turns out that was not the case.
Later on, Jones responded to the report on social media by tweeting a very clear message: “I never asked for a trade.”
All of this stems from the stalled contract talks between the Rams and Jones. Les Snead said in March that the team will let Jones play out the final year of his contract in 2024, choosing not to extend him before his deal expires.
Jones deleted the tweet about 45 minutes after posting it.
With Jones seeking a new contract, it’s possible the Rams are simply sending him a message by telling him he can see if there’s another team out there willing to meet his asking price. If so, the Rams would be willing to deal him for the right compensation.
