Erik ten Hag will hope Andre Onana can emulate his idol at Manchester United

With each day that passes, Manchester United seem more and more likely to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper.

MEN Sport understands United will make Andre Onana their number one target should David de Gea move on. The Cameroonian has experience of playing under Erik ten Hag thanks to their time together in Amsterdam so it is no surprise the Dutchman is seeking his services.

He may have only spent one season at Inter but Onana is reportedly hopeful of making a move to Old Trafford and that may be the best outcome for all parties considering the Serie A giants are in need of money due to their financial struggles.

When deciding on a new No.1, Ten Hag is likely to have prioritised one key attribute - the ability to play out from the back. In Onana he may have found the right man who can complete this role.

Speaking in November 2022, the 27-year-old described his style of play while naming his football inspiration and both answers will be music to United fans' ears.

"[Samir] Handanovic is a giant, I take off my hat to him. He always helps and advises me," the United target told SportWeek. "I’m a modern goalkeeper, I go out, I take a lot of risks and I play with my feet.

"As a child, I dreamed watching the miracles of [Gianluigi] Buffon and [Iker] Casillas, but the greatest is [Manuel] Neuer: he does crazy things, I am inspired by him." Arguably the greatest sweeper keeper of all time, Neuer's approach to goalkeeping is exactly what the Reds need next season.
