Erik ten Hag told why Bruno Fernandes shouldn't stop Manchester United from signing two midfielders

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister has told his former club that they should have no qualms about bringing in Christian Eriksen alongside Frenkie de Jong.

The playmaker is a free agent this summer after impressing with Brentford upon his January return. United have tabled an offer to the Dane with Erik ten Hag keen to recruit the 30-year-old.

Eriksen’s remarkable comeback from his on-field cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 also piqued the interests of Tottenham and former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte. However, it seems Spurs have not followed up on their interest in the midfielder, edging the door ajar for United.

Some onlookers forecast that his arrival could pose problems for Ten Hag with Bruno Fernandes also occupying an attacking midfield role. Both players will want regular game time and if played together may leave United exposed at the base of midfield, which would be occupied by De Jong if signed.

But speaking to the Metro, Pallister said that he believes the more quality players United have in their squad, the better. “I think that is a no-brainer if they can get their hands on him,” he said.

“Hopefully his medical issues are all dealt with, we saw in his role for Brentford last season that he has still got amazing ability and on a free transfer it’s a no brainer.

“You wonder how it would work with Bruno Fernandes at the club but that’s for Erik ten Hag (to sort). But I don’t think you can ever have too many quality players in the side.

“It gives you options, helps with injuries if that becomes a problem and when you have someone with the class of Eriksen… I would like to see that deal done as well.”

United are prioritising midfield recruits this summer, with De Jong being Ten Hag ’s primary target. Pallister said he hopes the club can “get that deal done” because he believes “midfield has been an area of concern.”
