Andy Cole says the Manchester United captaincy debate has been ‘put to bed’ by Erik ten Hag after he confirmed Harry Maguire would stay in the role.
The defender was left out of Tuesday’s friendly with Liverpool after picking up a slight knock prior to the encounter. There had been calls for Ten Hag to strip the England international of the armband after an underwhelming season.
However, he has rejected those suggestions, telling a press conference on Monday : "Harry Maguire is the captain. "I have to get to know all the players, but he's an established captain and he's achieved a lot of success. I don't see this as an issue.”

United legend Cole says the 52-year-old has made a big call and that ultimately the proof will be in the pudding. Speaking on MUTV about the captaincy call, he said: “It’s massive. I think last season it was split between what the fans wanted and who they thought would be captain.
“I think coming out and saying he’s the captain puts a lot to bed. It’s a big season for quite a lot of the boys and he’s one of them.
“You’re going to be judged on what you do on the football pitch and hopefully Harry has a good start.”
