Erik ten Hag will have to shoulder some responsibility for Manchester United’s rout at the hands of Brentford on Saturday, a former Reds goalkeeper has said.
The Dutchman became the first Old Trafford boss to lose both of his first two games since 1921. He has seen his side ship six goals against Brighton and the Bees with only an own goal in their favour to show for it.
As a result, United find themselves bottom of the Premier League table with Liverpool up next. Ten Hag has been criticised for choosing to play a team lacking in height against Brentford’s towering assets at the weekend.

Many fans had been concerned by Lisandro Martinez’s height upon his summer arrival and their fears were realised on 30 minutes when Bee Mee rose above the 5ft 9in defender to nod home the hosts’ third of the evening. Gary Neville was unimpressed by Ten Hag's tactics and former United goalkeeper Tim Howard was also critical of his approach.
He outlined how the team do not seem to have improved on last season’s woes and that Ten Hag should have acted sooner to prevent the first-half onslaught. Speaking on NBC, he said: “The manager has had enough time.
“He's had pre-season, a couple of games and he's had time to work with his team. We don't really see anything different from a tactical standpoint than we saw last year.
“I know he needs time but then again, in this particular game, yes, I would've liked to have seen someone hooked in the middle of the first half whether it be a centre-half or a midfielder. Make a change, let everybody know, put them on notice."
