Erik Ten Hag to Manchester United update as interview comes amid biting Old Trafford criticism

Erik ten Hag has reportedly interviewed for the job as Manchester United manager but former incumbent Louis van Gaal reckons his compatriot should not to take the role.

United’s interest in the current Ajax manager has been one of the biggest open secrets in the game and according to Manchester Evening News, it is understood that ten Hag has already been interviewed for the post though nothing has been rubber stamped by the club as all options remain on the table.

Van Gaal was the manager at Old Trafford between 2014-2016 but despite one FA Cup triumph, his time was often associated with acrimony with the club’s hierarchy.

Currently the Netherlands manager, his thoughts will have been very much geared towards this evening’s fixture against Germany but he couldn’t help but wax lyrical about the current situation at his former employers when asked.

He told reporters: “Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that is always good for Manchester United but Manchester United are a commercial club so it’s a difficult choice for a coach. It is better to go to a football club… he must choose a football club, not a commercial club.”

The bookmakers still think that ten Hag is the most likely man to be the next in charge at Old Trafford with odds of 1/3 available, Mauricio Pochettino is 5/1 while Roberto Mancini, who saw his Italian side fail to make the World Cup finals can be supported at 16/1 to be the first man since Ernest Mangnall to manage both clubs.
